Quotable: Made to Stick

Well I finished the next book on the pile last Thursday and it was well worth my time and at about 260 pages it was a pretty quick read. Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath is about crafting ideas, messages and advertisement to get maximum response. To be such a great book there are so few highlights that I don't event want to post them. They don't seem to make any sense out of context. So here's a modified "back of the book" and I definitely recommend it. Made to Stick

What Sticks? Whether a CEO or full time mom you've got ideas that you need to communicate: a new product coming to market, a strategy you want to sell your boss, values you are trying to instill in your children. but it's hard- fiendishly so- to transform the way people think and act. In this book, you'll learn the six key qualities of an idea that is made to stick.
Simplicity, Unexpectedness, Concreteness, Credibility, Emotional, Stories.
There you go. Off to the next great book!

But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.

Quotable

I finished the first book on my stack and it took me longer than I would have liked. Although the last post is dated for the first part of September, it was actually only published last week. I used an unfinished draft for the post so the date was a little mixed up. But it still took me several days to finish a book with only 130 pages. See You at the Pole was very successful however and I am thankful to the Lord for that. I'll blog about it soon. The Book is titled The Unquenchable Worshipper by Matt Redman. I put it on the top of the stack so that I could win a small victory right out of the gate. I highly recommend it.
Here are few Quotes from Matt and some scripture he quoted.

  • Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior (Habakkuk 3:17,18)
  • We can always find a reason to Praise
  • Many people might have chosen the path of bitterness and complaint as their response to God; but she chose the path of contentment and praise. The choice between these two paths faces each day, with every situation that's thrown our way. Bitterness dampens and even destroys our love for God. It eats away at the statement "God is love" and tells us He is not faithful. But contentment does the opposite: it fuels the heart with endless reasons to praise God.
  • We may be hard pressed on every side, weary and not able to sense God. But then a choice faces us- to fix our eyes on the circumstances or to cling to God and choose to worship Him, even when it hurts. The Heart of God loves the offerings of a persevering worshipper. though overwhelmed by many troubles they are even more overwhelmed by the beauty of God
  • I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes (2 Samuel 6:21,22)
  • Our Heavenly Father loves us with an extravagant abandon, passionate, undignified worship is our only response.
  • When we meet to worship the Lord although structure is important, it must never be allowed to strangle Life. And religion must never be allowed to dampen romance.
  • Unstoppable worshippers are adventurous hearts, taking every opportunity to demonstrate the good news for God to this world.
  • Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the Gospel.... pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should (Ephesians 6:19,20)

Mark 7:4-9
The Pharisees and religion scholars asked, “Why do your disciples flout the rules, showing up at meals without washing their hands?”
Jesus answered, “Isaiah was right about frauds like you, hit the bull’s-eye in fact:
These people make a big show of saying the right thing,
but their heart isn’t in it.
They act like they are worshiping me,
but they don’t mean it.
They just use me as a cover
for teaching whatever suits their fancy,
Ditching God’s command
and taking up the latest fads.”
He went on, “Well, good for you. You get rid of God’s command so you won’t be inconvenienced in following the religious fashions!

Quotable

Well I commented the other day that I would love to make time for more books. I have had an insatiable desire for books since childhood that was fueled even further when I got to College. You may not be able to tell it by my vernacular, but I was an English major. I simply believe speaking the dialect of my family is more important than conforming to an arbitrary standard of the English language written by someone else for some other people in some other time. Languages are primarily for speaking not for writing. Anyway my views of spoken and written languages is another post for another day (obviously both are important). You my also be able to tell that I leaned heavy on the lit electives as opposed to the comp.
Anyway the last book I read was about a month ago when I picked up The Old Man and the Sea, a Hemingway novella. It wasn't very long (which is why they call it a novella) so I devoured it in couple days before bed. Well, I've committed to whittling down the stack of books that have backed up on my "to be read pile". I'm going to try to read them in the order I have them stacked because they are blended up by subject matter and I'll give some lines I chose to highlight as I get finished.

Ecclesiastes 12:11-14

11 A wise teacher’s words spur students to action and emphasize important truths. The collected sayings of the wise are like guidance from a shepherd.
12 But, my child,* be warned: There is no end of opinions ready to be expressed. Studying them can go on forever and become very exhausting!
13 Here is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is the duty of every person. 14 God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad.
